Bentonite clay is thought to have the ability to absorb toxins, impurities, heavy metals and other internal contaminants. It works by attracting impurities to its external wall then absorbing them into the centre of the clay. Bentonite clay cannot be absorbed by the body so it is pushed out and expelled along with the nasties it has collected along the way.
It is derived from volcanic ash deposited in sea water.
